Kwadwo A. Gyan. This interactive map traces urban planning research, the gaps in the literature, the work that fills those gaps, and connections to earlier and later scholarship. The foundational empirical contribution makes measurable the mismatch between small-scale development (heterogeneity and incrementalism) and large-scale infrastructure (centralization).
Earlier work established concepts of incrementalism, decentralization, informality, regionalism, justice and infrastructure fragmentation. Gyan 2019–2021 operationalizes these ideas through a micro-spatial diagnostic: individual affordability and building timelines → material and completion heterogeneity → setback/easement and node-connectivity effects → regional infrastructure failure and flooding.
The foundational empirical contribution makes the mismatch between small-scale development (heterogeneity and incrementalism) and large-scale infrastructure (centralization) measurable by testing the physical and economic mechanisms that connect household-level development to infrastructure outcomes.
Earlier work is positioned by publication date and research lineage; later and adjacent work is positioned by date and topic overlap. The map shows connections represented in this curated literature set.
